Why Do We LOSE Points For Initiating New and Interesting Discussions?

If it weren't for new thread development, things would stagnate fast. Why do we lose points for starting new discussions rather than gain points?? The more the merrier.

It stops the ignoramuses from constantly asking "Is my avatar HOTT?" or, "What's your favorite color?".
By costing points, it is hoped that members put some thought into a q before asking it.

Very good question - probably to keep more people from asking some of those ridiculous questions over & over driving us all crazy.
