I am looking at diamond engagement rings that are "clarity enhanced", which makes them significantly less expensive. Would my girlfriend be able to tell?

FYI, she is not a jewelry expert.

Example of a clarity enhanced ring:

Myself, I would prefer a more modest ring, and would be happy that he didn't spend a small fortune on something that's just going to sit on my finger. The money is better spent on building and spending our lives together, than on a big wedding or a big ring.

However, not knowing your GF and knowing it does matter to some women, I guess I'd try to subtly approach the subject first. You can always use the "a friend of mine bought this ring..."

Before you buy a clarity enhanced diamond make sure that she is okay with it. It isn't if she is going to be able to tell, it's if she is okay with it. This is her ring, after all, and she is the one that is going to be wearing it, hopefully, for the rest of her life. There are many women who are willing to get a clarity enhanced diamond so they can have a bigger diamond while others would rather have a smaller diamond that is all natural.

You need to know if you have a clarity enhanced diamond because when you take them into the jeweler you have to tell the jeweler because the heat they use to do work on the ring with may damage the enhancement. Also make sure that the clarity enhancement is permanent.

Simple - find out if she prefers a larger size, or a smaller one that is not enhanced. If she prefers size, choose clarity enhanced - you'll get a bigger diamond for less. It's still a real diamond. It's just been restored. Also, many online diamond retailers will trade in a diamond after you buy it - so, if you choose a diamond company that carries all types of diamonds (clarity enhanced diamonds, HPHT diamonds, and GIA diamonds), you could always exchange it if she wants a different type after the fact. If size is important to her, she'll likely keep the clarity enhanced diamond. You should tell her it's clarity enhanced, just because a jeweler will likely tell her eventually anyway.

If your girlfriend is more interested in looks than quality, a CE diamond might be just fine. I will tell you that most women would expect an engagement diamond to be a genuine diamond with no unusual enhancements. Before you go with a CE diamond, just ask her if that's ok with her. If it is, understand that the point of a CE diamond is to not pay top price, so I hope you're not actually thinking of buying the one you linked. Everything about that ring, from the size to the style, screams "fake" and that's a lot of money for a low quality item. Check the link below for a site that offers common sense education about diamonds.

I would really be honest at this point or it may come out later and if you want to marry then just be honest and say you don't have much but would like to get a modest one now and maybe save up for a better one in the future. Its more about what the ring means than how much money you blow.

I would not purchase a clarity enhanced diamond. Have you read up on them and understand exactly what you're getting?

And if you're newer to diamond buying, I'd suggest looking somewhere more reputable than ebay:

(all of the above are reputable, legit sites)

why would u pay 6000 dollars for a fake ring? just go to walmart and spend 100 dollars and get her a decent pretty ring. thats what my hubby did,im not a high maintenance girl and dont care about expensive things, its the thought that he picked it out himself.......i love him for that...
