Why do black people always have to say "You know what I'm sayin"? or "You nah mean"? At least 5x per sentence?

Let me rephrase the question Why does "SOME" black people excuse me... "African americans" always have to say "You know what I'm sayin"? or "You nah mean"? At least 5x per sentence? Why do "SOME" african americans wear their pants hanging from their knees? Before you say I'm racist..... thats right I'm black!!!. I never say "You know that I'm sayin or you nah mean" If I have to ask that 5 times per sentence, obviously I'm not explaining myself properly. Also, I never wore my pants sagging down to my knees where everyone can see my boxers. That's not a cool look at all. Can you see an employer hiring you looking and talking like that?

Its what the street cats call "Gully" or "Grimey", which means thug love. Its popular ignorance. Yes in fact ideas can spread alot faster because the black culture is easily influenced. Intelligence is viewed as corny and being successful is being a sellout. Therefor to "keep it real," you got to keep it ignorant. NAH mean!

Yeah, the culture is bankrupt. Unfortunately, it's mostly black Americans but it's not limited to them. I see all kinds of people treating themselves like dirt.

Yeah both of them are pretty unintelligent looking/sounding. But I guess "You know what I'm saying" is just one of those 'filler' words/phrases that people use when they're thinking or trying to get a point across. A lot of younger people say "like" a whole bunch and a lot of older people say "if you will" randomly.

Oh my goodness, I am so glad someone else has notice the lack of vocabulary and the baggy clothes amongst African American. But I hate to tell you this, African Americans aren't the only race who talk or wear their clothes in such improper manner. I see it every day, White's, Asians and Latinos doing the exact same thing as African Americans.

yes u already answered your own question. SOME people say it, not everyone. So for you to ask why black people do it is a stereotype. And as for the pants, maybe those people like it from the media and rap artists.

Im with you...I am not black and I dont have a problem with black people at all....I have them as family members...due to marriage....anyway...its tacky to me when I see white men or black men wearing pants down past the rear ends...Its a look for young boys not men....I would never hire anyone who wore pants like that....as for the way they talk (white or black cuz both do it) Its about how you are brought up...and your education level....at least that is what I think....and some do it for attention......

its not just black people, everyone has their own catch phrases like some people constantly say "like" and "um"(white people tend to do it more) its just what the person grew up around and thats what they tend to say.

I can only assume it shows a lack of intelligence and imagination. Blacks generally are drawn to what is easy and cartoonish. They are born mimes and showoffs. The annoying repetition of phrases like "Ya know what I'm sayin'" is used to intimidate, the intention being to treat you as if you are very stupid and actually don't know what they are saying. The truth is, they don't know what they are saying. My advice is, if at all possible, do NOT listen. Turn them off. It is a devious and debilitating culture that worships death, ignorance, sex, drugs and gang mentality. It is a human virus that will lead to the end of education and culture.

I thought the album sucked. Lupe sounded uninspired on half the tracks. The production was overall garbage and the hooks couldn't have been worse. I also found it wholly ironic that Lupe tried to get political over pop beats. He's getting all Immortal Technique on us but he's clearly having creative licensing issues. And I don't blame Lupe for this hot mess, Atlantic clearly screwed him. The album should be aptly titled: Atlantic Records "LASERS". "Have you ever had the feeling that you were being had?" I think Lupe does.

It depends on who and where they are. In today's society many people (not just blacks) speak in slang. I know you have seen other cultures use different types of slang that is equally annoying. Both me and my husband are black and I never use slang but my husband does in certain situations. He adapts to whatever situation he is in. If he is hanging out with his friends he speaks that way but with me he talks regular and at work he speaks intelligently (he has a high-paying corporate job and a Master's degree). One thing he doesn't do is speak that way or wear his pants hanging down. But just like his speech his drss fepends on the situation. He can go from jeans, tims, and hoodies to golf shirt and khakis, to a suit and tie in a matter of days.

If people knew that wearing pants off your butt originated in prison and the entire history behind it I think they would be less inclined to do so. Unfortunately ignorance has no color.

Well I would say this is the diversity of this culture. I have experienced that not only black people but many ethnicities do similar things to this. I would ask why do girls have to wear such skimpy clothes. I'm only 21 and never was into that. Why do people have to use vulgar language? I am smart enough that if i'm mad or upset i can fuss somone out without cussing once. Well the answer I think to all of these is that some peoples standards arent as high as they used to be. People think it is easier to freeload off their families, get pregnant and get welfare, or to just be dumb so their not expected to do as much. So many people say they cant succeed because of where they came from, but the only real thing holding them back is themselves. There are grants and scholarships for anyone who applies themself. Anyone who makes a stand and says I'm not going to do this. God has made me more than a conquerer. My family, my circumstances, my hurts, and my past are not going to hold me back from finding my dream. I will be successful. I may be persecuted but thats not going to stop me. I can say this because I have come from this. A family of excuse makers. Dont worry about those people and just reach for your dreams. You achieve that higher standard. Hold to who God has made you to be and what He wants you to do and the rest will come.

Well, the phrase such as "You know what I'm saying" and so on is a type of slogan americans use these days not just african american. Kind of like Kali peeps saying "Hella" , it gets annoying but hey freedom of speech right.

I don't mind the baggy jeans look, as long as they are wearing a pants in public...haha. There is various styles of fashion and apparently showing the boxer is one of them and had been around for a long time.

So you know what I am saying... ;)

Why not, why does it bother you. My husband is black and he dont do that, but all 4 of his brothers do. I dont see a problem with it, and I say you know what im sayin and you nah' mean sometimes and I am a white girl. And I have seen a lot of white, mexicans, asians you name it, I have seen a lot of people do that, so you cant narrow it down to "black people" or "african americans". Dont hate, there are probably things about you that people could ask why you do it, and say it aint cool, but they dont because they have much better things to do then worry about why you do dis or dat or whatever. ok.

interesting question...i love the starburst commercial where the guy keeps asking "you know what i mean?" its so dumb. at the end he says,"you know what i mean. most people dont know what i mean. i like you." its funny in a dumb way. and i agree that if your always asking that, then you really are not explaining yourself right...but back to your question. why do african americans use it so much? i think out of all nationalities here in the united states there are alot of african americans who dont get a proper education, limiting their vocabulary and therefore there ability to better express themselves. other races use it as well, but never as much as black people tend to. and maybe it also becomes a habit to use that phrase, but it is definately a bad one. anything in excess is bad.

also a reason black people might tend to overuse that phrase is because they may want feedback on what they are saying, not neccesarily the need to be understood. they want their listeners opinion but they simply use the limited vocabulary they have to obtain it.

It's good that you are not the stereotypical "black" person that act's and talk like that. So in general, you answered you're own question.

Not all black people talk and act and dress that way.

Hey, I'm Hispanic, and I don't ride in a low rider with my friends and I didn't get a wedding party thing because I turned 15. I'm not a woman yet. Sheesh. And I don't talk like I'm from East LA and I don't draw fake eyebrows on my forehead with a sharpie either. haha.

I get it you are talking about your wife.

"some" means your wife.

The reason your wife says "You know what I'm sayin?" is because you don't listen to her. If you would just concentrate a little on what she is saying she would not have to treat you like a child. As for your wife wearing pants down to knees will I suspect that there may be a reason, but you don't want to hear it.

I'm hispanic and I feel the same way about my own people..LOL I'm not prejudice at all, but I think what it all comes down to is the way a person was raised and to a degree a little splash of ignorance. I think that some youngsters that speak like that think it's hip and cool. I see some little mexican boys wearing that baggy a$$ clothes and I'm like WTF?? What is this kids parents teaching them or NOT teaching them? To a degree I blame upbringing and as I said, some ignorance. They just don't know any better.

Without passing judgement: some people are socialized within different cultures and/or subcultures than others, which is why some people speak differently than others, dress differently than others, have diffferent defense mechanisms than others, etc.

And, whether one is employed usually depends on what skills they have, and whether they fit into the group... And, since there are many different employers representing many different workplaces, yes, I can see many different people being hired by employers.

Those phrases are not just said by African Americans....others say them too.....I say "you know what I'm sayin" myself sometimes and I've heard others say it so I don't think it's a big deal....but I don't wear my pants sagging.

Why do "SOME" black people constantly ask why "SOME" black people use ghetto slang and wear baggy pants? Easy... Someone feels like they're not really a black person because they're not like that. Yep, you're a Blacka (cracka who is black in color). =)

I have noticed that we are surrounded by idiots of all colors and nationalities. I have a real "foam at the mouth" attitude about people who say "You Know" all the time; like quadzillion times in every sentence, "you know". It drives me nuts.
