added husbands name hyphenated to mine, now want to drop the hyphenation, husband took my maidernname after al?

Question

hyphenated my last name and now I want to drop the hyphenation and just keep my maiden name as my husband has taken my last name...example was Jones, became Jones-Smith, now want to just be Jones again. Social Security in Pennsylvania is saying I must go through the courts to change my name back to Jones. I already changed my name with the State on my driver's license, but the SS department will not accept the change. Thanks for any advice!

wow way to have a whipped man! the same way you change any name. you go thru the entire process, if you need help see a lawyer i have an inkling you will be seeing him soon enough anyway.

I don't know... I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't take his name. Well that's nice you met a man willing to do this... I'm sure he will do everything you tell him. Just hope he doesn't grow a set in a few years. That could put a damper things! Just kidding :) I'm sure you have legitimate reasons that are non of our business.

Because of identity theft SS has become very strict. There are no short cuts....sorry.

Yes, you must file a name change petition to have his name legally changed. If you had your name legally changed to include the hyphenated name, then you must file a petition, as well.



I don't think it's terribly expensive to do this, just kind of a pain. Check out NOLO.com to see if there is helpful information there, as well as your local county clerk's website.

I'm not sure why you would have problems at the Social Security Office. Talk to a lawyer if Social Security won't change it.

You need to do whatever the Social Security office says you need to do. I would walk in there and talk to someone one on one instead of playing phone tag.
